Full course description

DESCRIPTION:

This online, self-directed course provides a foundational introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI (GenAI) within the context of UBC. Designed as an accessible entry point, the course builds practical literacy while grounding learning in responsible, ethical, and context-aware application.

Learners will develop a shared language and understanding of GenAI concepts, explore practical tools and real-world use cases, and examine institutional considerations such as privacy, data protection, consent, and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs). The course also addresses common concerns about automation and emphasizes how GenAI is reshaping — rather than replacing — work, highlighting opportunities for human-centered innovation.

This foundational GenAI learning package serves as the first phase of a broader, holistic strategy to embed AI literacy into leadership development, onboarding, and ongoing professional learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define foundational AI and GenAI concepts using shared institutional language

  • Identify practical GenAI tools and describe appropriate use cases within their role

  • Apply principles of responsible and ethical GenAI use, including privacy, data stewardship, consent, and PIA considerations

  • Evaluate GenAI applications within the university’s institutional and regulatory context
