Overview
Beyond providing supervision, many supervisors also serve as a role model, career coach, mentor and advocate for the students they work with. This course will explore leadership practices that help you navigate the nuances of this role with consideration to the unique context of supervising student staff. In addition to key practices to support your student staff, this course will introduce research-driven best practices to enhance your leadership comfort and impact.
After participating in this course, supervisors will be able to:
- Articulate the unique elements of leading student staff
- Apply key policies and employment rights
- Respond to supervisory scenarios in alignment with their leadership approach
- Draft processes and practices that communicate culture, expectations and development opportunities
This course will cover:
- Unique context of leading student staff
- Role and responsibilities of a supervisor
- Employment rights of student staff and legal obligations of supervisors
- Opportunities to reflect on your leadership practice
- Key leadership practices including setting expectations, professional development, culture and situational leadership
Target Audience
This course is for supervisors of student staff, not student staff supervisors (e.g. student staff who are team leads). Supervisors include those who directly manage the workload of students as well as those who work alongside students in programs and projects.
Content is relevant to all leaders of student staff, no matter the size of your team or type of work you do.
