DESCRIPTION

This is a three-part workshop series, a collaborative offering through the Equity Inclusion Office and Conflict Theatre exploring conflict, resistance, diversity, polarities, tension and resolution. 

ACT I: October 7, Foundations: How do we understand conflict?

Before the session, participants will complete a quick self-reflection to set the stafe for the series. During the session, participants will:

  • Learn about UBC’s Conflict Engagement Initiative
  • Reflect on resistance in self and other, and its relationship to power
  • Explore options for engaging in conflict
  • Engage in a Q&A opportunity to discuss pertinent and timely needs

ACT II: October 14, Practice: Rehearsing Real Life

During the session, participants will:

  • Observe a conflict performance put on by classmates
  • Identify navigation points within an in-progress conflict
  • Practice their learnings by volunteering to perform in the conflict play (optional)

Note: No acting experience required – It’s exactly like having a conversation, and the Joker (facilitator) will support your entry into the scene. No pressure -- everyone is welcome to participate at their own comfort level.

ACT III: October 21, Polarization: What do you do with polarization?

Before the second act, participants will reflect on their own workplace context to contextualize the session. During the session, participants will:

  • Explore polarities and polarization
  • Learn how to leverage polarities as a tool for insight and learning
  • Engage in a Q&A opportunity to discuss pertinent and timely needs

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this series, participants will be able to:

  • Display a deeper understanding of conflict
  • Approach conflict with curiosity and openness
  • Respond productively and authentically during difficult conversations
  • Demonstrate meta-skills of self-awareness, self-regulation, relationship management, and empathy/compassion
  • Actively contribute to UBC’s respectful, inclusive and creative environment

AUDIENCE

This session is designed for all UBC faculty and staff who want more tools and confidence for successfully navigating difficult conversations and conflict situations.

INSTRUCTORS: Tom Scholte, Roquela Fernandez & Ashley Moore

Prof. Tom Scholte is a Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film as well as Faculty Lead of Conflict Theatre @ UBC. His research and practice in the realm of conflict involves the application of systems theory to modes of experiential learning based in the Theatre of the Oppressed.

Roquela Fernandez is the Program Manager for the Conflict Theatre Program. 

Ashley Moore is the Conflict Engagement Specialist with the Equity and Inclusion Office.
