  • Equity Data and Decision-Making

Course outline and learning outcomes

Across the three parts, learners apply equitable hiring concepts and practices to strengthen informed, evidence-based decision-making throughout the hiring process. Each part builds on the previous one, moving from foundational concepts to applied practice across the hiring process.

Overall course learning goals:

By the end of the  Hiring Equity 2026–2027 course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how UBC's commitments to equitable hiring and Inclusive Excellence inform the responsibilities and decision-making of those involved in hiring.

  • Apply legal, policy, employment equity, and accessibility requirements throughout the hiring process.

  • Recognize and mitigate cognitive and social biases that can influence candidate evaluation.

  • Navigate UBC's eight-stage hiring process and identify the roles, responsibilities, and equity considerations through each stage.

  • Use equity-informed strategies and structured tools to reduce systemic barriers and support fair, transparent, consistent, and accountable hiring outcomes.

This structured approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of equitable hiring and prepares participants to apply these principles in their practice as a selections committee or hiring committee chair, committee member, Employment Equity Advisor (EEA) or any administrative support role.

Successful completion of all three parts of this module, along with the quiz, will result in a completion certificate.

Learners are encouraged to revisit the course materials in preparation for future hiring processes. To support ongoing learning and updated practice, it is recommended that learners retake the course one year after completion to renew their certificate.
